Nearly every label complaint we hear comes back to the same moment: someone chose the stock by looking at a screen. The design was approved, the colours were right, and nobody asked what the label was going to touch. Three weeks later the corners are lifting, the print has bled, or the label has gone translucent in a chiller.
Choosing between a paper and a waterproof label sticker is not a quality decision. Both are real products with real uses. It is a question of exposure, and it takes about four questions to answer.
What paper stock is genuinely good at
Paper label stickers — art paper, mirrorkote, simili, kraft — print beautifully. Ink sits into the surface, so colour looks rich rather than glassy, and text stays crisp at small sizes. Paper is the cheapest stock, takes foil and embossing well, and is the correct choice for anything that lives a dry indoor life.
Use paper where the label is:
- On an outer carton or a shipping box kept indoors
- On dry goods: biscuits, coffee bags, snack boxes, dry-mix pouches
- A short-life item — an event seal, a promotional flash, a shelf marker
- Part of a natural or artisanal look, where brown kraft is doing brand work a plastic film cannot
What paper is not good at is water. A splash darkens it, condensation makes it wrinkle, and a wipe with a damp cloth can lift the ink. Laminating a paper label helps the face but does nothing for the edges, which is where moisture actually gets in.
What waterproof stock is for
“Waterproof” in practice means a plastic film face: white or clear polypropylene, vinyl, or polyester. These do not absorb water at all, so condensation, splashes and a wipe-down leave them unchanged.
Use a waterproof sticker label where the product:
- Goes in a fridge, a chiller or a freezer, where the container sweats every time it comes out
- Contains liquid: sauces, drinks, oils, cleaning products, shampoos, skincare
- Is handled with wet or oily hands
- Lives outdoors, or in a humid store room — which in the Klang Valley is most store rooms
- Needs to survive a wipe with a cloth, which almost everything sold on a shelf does
The four questions we ask before quoting
- What is the container made of, and what shape is it? A flat glass jar, a squeezy plastic bottle and a kraft box each need a different face stock and a different flexibility.
- Will it get wet, and how? Condensation is different from a rinse, which is different from immersion. Only the first two are realistically survivable by a label.
- Is it filled cold? Applying any adhesive to an already-cold surface is the single most common cause of corners lifting. If the jar is filled and chilled before labelling, we specify a freezer-grade adhesive from the start.
- How long does it need to look good? A three-week promotional run and a two-year asset label are not the same job.
The claim we will not make for you
Water-resistant and solvent-resistant are different properties, and a lot of suppliers blur them. Vinyl and polypropylene sticker labels are water-resistant: rain, condensation, splashes and a damp cloth are all fine. They are not solvent-resistant. If your container gets wiped with alcohol, thinner or an aggressive cleaner, that is a polyester or polymeric job, and we will move you onto that stock and tell you why rather than let a vinyl label fail in the field.
